Writing Your Life Story: Why

How often do you wish you knew more about your family? When we’re young, we don’t necessarily pay attention to the stories our elders tell us. Later in life, we often become interested in knowing who and where we come from.

We want to learn more about what makes us who we are, and we may even become interested in genealogy. This has definitely been something I have focused on more this last year and started an ancestry tree. Unfortunately, for many people, the resources that were there when we were younger have become faded memories and the people who could fill us in have already passed on. There are definitely things I wish I could ask my grandmother or grandfather.

A common life lesson is to take large tasks and break them into smaller parts to make them achievable. This is the thought process behind my 2021 Legacy Journal Challenge.  In my Legacy Planning + Productivity for Moms Facebook Groups, we are enjoying journaling on a topic once a week for one year. When you’re finished, we’ll have captured the memories, values, wishes for your children, things we want them to know... that will create a true legacy for our families.

The questions posed that we journal on allow you to catalog many things about yourself, such as information that you have learned about yourself and the world,  your life philosophies, funny stories you remember, and tales about pets.

I believe capturing your values, insights, stories and experiences is so important, in fact, that I incorporate it into my estate planning process inside the Guardian Guide.

This way, we ensure you are passing on not just your financial assets, but your whole family wealth, and that is what’s most often lost when you are gone. We start this process off during the Family Wealth Planning Session as we work through the biggest pieces of decision making.

If you aren't in the Facebook group already, come join us! It is never too late to start creating this documented legacy for your loved ones!
